Since 2013 the annual Pistol Ultra Run in Alcoa, TN has been drawing large crowds, filling before registration closes, and helping to support great local charities. This year, the event is slated for March 16 & 17, 2019 and has a huge schedule of events. The Saturday events will be:

  • 50K that starts at 7:55 AM (Note: “There is a 2 or 3 person relay option for the 50K distance. The 3 relay legs are only about 10.35 miles long each. For a two person relay, one runner will do two legs. The exchange zone is near the start/finish area.”)
  • 100K and the 100 Miler that will start at 8 AM
  • 50 Miler starts at 8 PM

Sunday events include:

  • The Mini Pistol 10 Miler starts at 7:55 AM
  • The 1 mile Family Fun Run/Walk at 8 AM

Long races end 32 hours later with 20 hours allotted for the 50-mile race, 8 hours for the 10-mile race and a finish time officially set for 2PM on Sunday. The person who is the last to complete the 100 mile event is given the highly prized “Slowest Draw Award”.

The events will occur at the fantastic Alcoa-Maryville Greenway and registration details are at the event website, here. There are opportunities for meals with registration and participants can purchase special hoodies marking their participation in this wonderful community event. Your registration as a runner includes a t-shirt, finisher’s hat, a “swag bag” full of “swag,” support throughout the entire race and a finisher’s award.

This year’s race is going to benefit the Foothill Striders, which is a local non-profit that focuses on encouraging local families and individuals to lead the healthiest lifestyle possible while also promoting recreation in the area. It aims at community service and they give two Blount County high school seniors scholarships each year. The students awarded are those who shine academically as well as being very physically active in activities like hiking, running and biking.

Is This for Everyone?

You may have read that there are 50-mile and 100-mile events and thought that this is not for you. Remember that there is the one-mile family fun run as well as a ten mile event, and relay teams are welcome to sign up for the 50k race. You can also volunteer and support other runners. This may be an “urban ultra” run, but for many years it has also been noted as the perfect “first time race” for a new runner, and walkers are always welcome to participate, too!

So, if you are eager to get outside, welcome spring, see how the Alcoa-Maryville Greenway looks and support great local organizations, the Pistol Ultra Run is the perfect choice.
