Townsend Offers Wintertime Getaway

Monday March 01, 2004

TOWNSEND, Tenn. -- If you’re looking for a place to get away from it all, a romantic hideaway, a cure for the winter blues, a remedy for your family’s cabin fever, then Townsend, Tennessee could be just what the doctor ordered. Located at the entrance of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Townsend is known by most who visit and live there as the "peaceful side of the Smokies." The small community is only minutes away from the world-renowned Cades Cove, as well as one of the southeast’s fastest growing entertainment capitals, the Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville area. "During the winter, Townsend is a winter paradise. You can cozy up near the fireplace in your cabin or cottage and look out at the snow-capped mountains, or enjoy a hayride or hike through Cades Cove," said Herb Handly, the Smoky Mountain Visitor Bureau’s executive vice president of tourism. "When you’re in Townsend, it’s like you’re in another world. You don’t have all the commotion or headaches that go along with city living. Yet, you’re only about 30 minutes away from the outlet and shopping malls and some of the best entertainment in the southeast." Townsend is especially popular among couples during the winter who are looking for a romantic vacation. There are more than 300 cabins, bed and breakfasts, and cottages in the area, tucked away in coves, in the woods and on mountain tops. There are also several hotels and motels. Townsend is one of three main entrances to the national park and the best route to Cades Cove, the park’s most famous spot. The beauty of the area has drawn visitors since the early 1800s, first by stagecoach and train and later by roads often built on the railroad beds. For more information on the Townsend area, please contact the Smoky Mountain Convention & Visitors Bureau at 1-800-525-6834 or 1-865-448-6134.
