Smoky Mountain Pottery Festival Provides Artists Opportunity to Share Craft

The festival is designed to showcase the fine pottery available in East Tennessee and the Smoky Mountain area

  Saturday, June 7, 2008 • 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. • Townsend, Tenn.

 

WHAT:           The Blount County Chamber of Commerce and the Smoky Mountain Convention and Visitors Bureau will host the Smoky Mountain Pottery Festival, a juried show which will bring together potters from around the region to exhibit, sell, and demonstrate their craft. The festival is designed to showcase the fine pottery available in East Tennessee and the Smoky Mountain area, as well as to educate young people and the public about pottery. 

 

The event will include demonstration areas for throwing and hand building, Raku firing, a Children's Tent and educational programs. Hugh Bailey has been chosen as the featured guest potter. Born in 1934 in Bristol, VA, Bailey obtained his B.A. from Berea College in Art and a Masters of Fine Art from Indiana University.  He is a member of the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild, the Foothills Craft Guild, and the Knoxville Watercolor Society.  He worked for 41 years as graphic designer for the University of TN publications department, and has been a potter for 50 years, making unique animals and fanciful creatures.

                                    10 a.m. to 5 p.m.   

                       

WHERE:        The event will be held at the Townsend Visitors Center, located at 7906 East Lamar Alexander Parkway.  Townsend is located in East Tennessee and is a gateway to the Cades Cove entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in the county.
